About the project

This research examined the potential to use the area around septic systems as a heat source for ground-source heat pumps. The project investigated whether the naturally higher temperatures found near septic systems could improve heat pump performance and help reduce installation costs.

The challenge

Ground-source heat pumps are highly efficient heating technologies, but their adoption is often limited by the cost and complexity of installing underground heat-exchange systems. The project sought to determine whether existing septic infrastructure could provide a practical alternative for capturing geothermal energy.
