Photovoice: Exploring the mental well-being of racialized immigrant youth in Toronto

About the project
This project was conducted in partnership with the Toronto Film Forum to explore the social and cultural factors that influence the mental well-being of young Bangladeshi Canadian men. The research focused on community expectations, identity, belonging and the experience of navigating social and economic pressures.
The challenge
Young people from immigrant communities may face unique pressures related to family expectations, cultural identity and definitions of success. The project sought to better understand these experiences and create opportunities for community dialogue about mental well-being and support.
Approach
- Used Photovoice, a participatory research method that combines photography and storytelling
- Engaged youth, parents and community leaders in the research process
- Collected photographs and personal reflections representing participants’ lived experiences
- Facilitated discussions, focus groups and community conversations
- Shared findings through exhibitions, seminars and public engagement activities
Results
- Generated community-driven insights into the experiences of young Bangladeshi Canadian men
- Created visual and narrative resources that captured participants’ perspectives
- Facilitated conversations about mental well-being, identity and community expectations
- Engaged community members through exhibitions and public events
