About the City of Brantford

The City of Brantford is committed to advancing sustainability through community programs, environmental initiatives, and public engagement efforts that support a more sustainable future.

The challenge

While sustainability is a key priority for the City of Brantford, ensuring that information reaches all residents can be challenging. The project sought to better understand how sustainability messages are received and identify opportunities to improve communication with diverse audiences, including those who may have limited access to digital information.

Approach

  • Reviewed the City of Brantford’s sustainability communications and outreach materials
  • Conducted more than 400 in-person surveys with community members
  • Examined public understanding of sustainability-related concepts and messaging
  • Identified barriers to accessing information and community engagement opportunities
  • Explored communication channels that could improve outreach and accessibility

Results

  • Generated insights into how residents understand and engage with sustainability messaging
  • Identified opportunities to make sustainability communications clearer and more accessible
  • Highlighted the importance of community-based information channels and outreach locations
  • Provided recommendations to strengthen public engagement efforts
  • Created a foundation for future sustainability communication initiatives and research

Why it matters

Effective communication is essential for building awareness and participation in sustainability initiatives. This research helps:

  • Improve public understanding of sustainability programs and initiatives
